In the Bible: Job and the Shadow of death (2)

In the Bible (ASV), Death is mentioned 373 times; the Shadow of Death is mentioned 16 times.   In the Quran, Death is mentioned 34 times, and the Shadow of death is not found therein in the entire Quran.

.

In the Bible, It is interesting that Adam, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses etc. did not talk about the Shadow of death and it is only Job who talks about it.

Job, the Perfect Biblical man, said: although there is no violence in my hands, and my prayers are pure; however:

1)    God gives me up to the ungodly and casts me into the hands of the wicked,

2)    God broke me apart,

3)    God seized me by the neck,

4)    God dashed me to pieces,

5)    God set me up as his target,

6)    God’s archers surround me. He

7)    God slashes open my kidneys and does not spare,

8)    God pours out my gall bladder on the ground,

9)    God breaks me with breach upon breach,

10) God runs upon me like a warrior

Then Jehovah, the Lord God answered Job out of the whirlwind and said:

1) Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge?

2)  Dress for action like a man; I will question you, and you make it known to me.

3) Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding.

4) Who determined its measurements—surely you know! Or who stretched the line upon it?

5) On what were its bases sunk, or who laid its cornerstone,

6) When the morning stars sang together and all the sons of God shouted for joy?

7) Have the gates of death been opened unto thee? Or hast thou seen the doors of the shadow of death?

In the Quran: Job and the Shadow of death (2)

The Shadow of death is not mentioned in the Quran.

Job was a great Prophet. He had been afflicted with the loss of all of his possessions and children, the laceration of his body, his being shunned by all except his wife, for a period of about eighteen years, as well as the affliction of enduring a straitened means of livelihood.

Verse 4:163 says that Job is inspired as the prophets before and after him inspired too.

(Lo! We inspire you O Muhammad) We have sent Gabriel with the Quran as We inspired Noah, and the prophets after him, and, as, We revealed to Abraham and, his two sons, Ishmael and Isaac, and Jacob, the son of Isaac, Jacob and the Tribes, and Jesus and Job and Jonah and Aaron, and Solomon, and We gave to, David the Inscribed Book, the Psalms.

It should be emphasized that Muslims respect equally all the Prophets sent by Allah.

In addition, Verses 38:41-43 briefly give  the story of Job and his oath.

The verses say:

And mention also our bondman Job, when he prayed and called out to his Lord, saying, ‘Lo! Satan has afflicted me with hardship, harm, and suffering.

Herein, Job attributes all his sickness to Satan, even though all things are from Allah, to show reverence in his call to Allah.

Then the Angel Gabriel said to him: O Job! Strike the ground with your foot; when he did so, a spring gushed out. Gabriel said to him: This spring is a cool bath, take a bath in it. When he took a bath his wounds healed. Gabriel asked him to strike the ground with his foot again and another spring gushed out. Gabriel said: and this is refreshing drink; this is cool, sweet water, drink from it! When he drank, his inside ailment was cured.

And Allah bestowed on Job again his household which Allah made to perish and therewith the like thereof in the life of this world and it is said in the Hereafter, a mercy and a blessing from Allah to Job, and a memorial, an admonition for men of understanding, for those possessed of intellect among people.

Hence, Job in the Quran is not Job in the Bible

  • He was steadfast and excellent in trial,
  • He was ever turning in repentance to Allah
  • He was ever obedient to Allah.  Indeed
  • He was a penitent soul and betaking himself to Allah’s obedience.
  • He never ever complained
  • He never ever talked rude to his Creator.

The Bible:

Job 16:11-17 (New International Version)

11 God has turned me over to evil men and thrown me into the clutches of the wicked.

12 All was well with me, but he shattered me; he seized me by the neck and crushed me. He has made me his target;

13 his archers surround me. Without pity, he pierces my kidneys and spills my gall on the ground.

14 Again and again he burst upon me; he rushes at me like a warrior.

15 “I have sewed sackcloth over my skin and buried my brow in the dust.

16 My face is red with weeping; deep shadows ring my eyes;

17 yet my hands have been free of violence and my prayer is pure.

Job 24:14-17 (English Standard Version)

14The murderer rises before it is light that he may kill the poor and needy, and in the night he is like a thief.

15The eye of the adulterer also waits for the twilight, saying, ‘No eye will see me’; and he veils his face.

16In the dark they dig through houses; by day they shut themselves up; they do not know the light.

17For deep darkness is morning to all of them; for they are friends with the terrors of deep darkness.

Job 38:1-7 and 17 (American Standard Version)

1 Then Jehovah answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said,

2 Who is this that darkeneth counsel by words without knowledge?

3 Gird up now thy loins like a man; for I will demand of thee, and declare thou unto me.

4 Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? Declare, if thou hast understanding.

5 Who determined the measures thereof, if thou knowest? Or who stretched the line upon it?

6 Whereupon were the foundations thereof fastened? Or who laid the corner-stone thereof,

7 When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?

17Have the gates of death been revealed unto thee? Or hast thou seen the gates of the shadow of death?

The Quran:

Verse 4:163 (Yusuf Ali Translation)

We have sent thee inspiration, as we sent it to Noah and the messengers after him: we sent inspiration to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob and the tribes, to Jesus, job, Jonah, Aaron, and Solomon, and to David we gave the psalms.

Verses 38:41-43 (Yusuf Ali Translation)

﴿41﴾commemorate our servant job. Behold he cried to his lord: “the evil one has afflicted me with distress and suffering!”

﴿42﴾ (the command was given:) “strike with thy foot: here is (water) wherein to wash, cool and refreshing, and (water) to drink.”

﴿43﴾ and we gave him (back) his people, and doubled their number,- as a grace from ourselves, and a thing for commemoration, for all who have understanding.
