As a mid-day meal NGO in Telangana, The Akshaya Patra Foundation first served free school meal to the children of Hyderabad in October 2008. Akshaya Patra is a full-fledged mid-day meal NGO in India that began with the vision of ‘No child in India shall be deprived of education because of hunger’ in June 2000. Strategically increasing the number of beneficiaries every year this today serves mid-day meal to more than 54,849 (as on March 2014) children every day covering 454 Government schools in Telangana. It runs a mechanised centralised kitchen to prepare nutritious and fresh mid-day meals for the beneficiaries and needs support from NGO volunteers.

Apart from working as a NGO in Telangana, Akshaya Patra serves mid-day meal on nine other states of India. Each day Akshaya Patra serves freshly cooked wholesome meal to more than 1.4 million children by covering 10,661 Government schools. This NGO covers 23 locations across the 10 states. The operational expanse of Akshaya Patra allows it to not only provide food but also support education of children who otherwise would have been sent to earn for their meal. It works with the motto of providing unlimited food for education. Hence it has been working tirelessly for almost 15 years without compromising on the quality of food. This NGO in India makes sure that each morsel of the meal is enjoyed by the children. Therefore the NGO serves local palate of the region. For example: the menu of north zone locations includes roti (Indian flat bread) in the meal whereas south zone locations have rice in their meal menu.

While serving as a NGO in Telangana, and other states in the country, this NGO in India realised the significant role that volunteers can play in spreading the message about the potential of mid-day meal programme in building up a literate and confident nation. Like many other non-profit organisations Akshaya Patra too have a platform for volunteer participation. The NGO volunteer programme is a platform for citizens with a trait of being the catalyst of change for the betterment of the society. It gives them an opportunity to know about the programme, its management, operational nitty-gritty, resource mobilisation avenues and most importantly the beneficiaries. Being a NGO volunteer one can choose to support Akshaya Patra in various ways like knowledge sharing, on ground participation, spreading the word through online and offline mediums, conduct fundraising events, participate or conduct awareness events and campaigns and many more such activities.

Over the years,Akshaya Patra has witnessed that by working as a mid-day meal NGO it has been able to positively alter millions of young lives. The heart-warming stories of beneficiaries are a testimony to the reason why mid-day meal should be supported and continued. Provide a wholesome meal so that a child can grow, learn and achieve.
